When I Grow Up

When I grow up:

I want not to be disappointed.

I want to feel that I am a success
and that I love my success.

I want to have learned,
and I want to keep learning.

I want to be in love,
preferably with the same person
I'm in love with now.

I want to have touched someone's life.

I want to be grateful for
all that's been done for me.

I want to be able to sit quietly
and watch the sunset
and appreciate the beauty
in which I exist.

I want to miss my childhood
yet yearn for the future.

I want to know what I want,
to know how to get it,
and to have the strength to try.

I want to smile every day,
even if it's the last thing that feels appropriate.

I want to understand why
my father did what he did.

I want not to be angry
and bitter for going
through difficulties.

I want to be able
to give blood
without passing out.

I want to have everything
I want and need,
yet know there is so much more
which I shall have.

Then I can truly begin to live.
